Wow! I saw your video. I thought I was the only one working on this.
I agree that electric is the way to go. The military has pretty much said that all new craft will be electric.
I’ve been working on a concept for LSA. I know my design does not have enough power to work. But, like you, I’m betting on the future.
I’ve been working on a craft that should be easy to build. Simple sheets of aluminum. It should be able to fly and drive. However lately my craft is VTOL, do I’m thinking that driving should be considered the “last mile”. No need to have it run at 80 mph, but only to get you to a plug in.
The wings unfold so it should be able to drive on the road.
The front wheel is an electric motor.
It is controlled by 3 banks of 5 EDF engines each. So each wing has 15 engines or 30 total for the wings. The real engines is again 5 EDF engines. But they only extract for VTOL.
So far the software works. It will do what you ask. No linkage for controls. Everything is controlled by wire. No tail feathers. Because the wings are held at 12degrees when they are extended the automatically go to zero degrees. The wing is therefore used as trim. When flying the rear engines are retracted and only extended when needed.
Everything is light and simple to build. It has room for a power plant from several electric vehicles. I’m working on a 1/5″ model with 70mm EDF’s.

The software is written in RFO-BASIC on a android tablet. To test it, I wrote a simulation on a android tablet, and held it level. Then tilted and changed direction of the tablet and watched the software change power and angles of the EDF’s to keep it level and try to keep it in the right direction.
Height has preference over Speed. Speed cannot exceed (height – 20 feet) or 90% of the power to the engines. So at 20 feet the craft will not move. The 90% is because I need some power to speed up some engines to keep it level, and it seems to work at that power. If you are at 1000 feet and ask for 900 mph it will only let you go to whatever speed is less than 90% engine power.
To land simply ask for 0 height. It starts a control drop and reduces speed to match (height – 20). Once speed is below 100 mph, the rear EDF extract. Basically a vertical landing.
All the wing extraction and engine movements are simple stepper motors.
All information is connected via bluetooth. So bringing your tablet on board automatically connects all avionics and control to the software.
I’m still testing the software, so some or all of it may change.
Everything is easy to build. Simple sheets of aluminum, or whatever you like. The swing wing is built on the bench and bolted in. So is the real motor extraction device.
It shows the wing and rear motors extracted and stored.
It has a Nissan motor electric generator and battery pack.
Engines are EDF’s. Front tire is a electric motorcycle engine.
I’m looking to build a 1/4 or 1/5 scale using 70mm EDF’s.
